Wonder Box Curriculum: GOD’S RAINBOW PROMISE

Earth Day, Lent 1 Year B (Genesis 9:8-17, Mark 1:1-15)

Salal + Cedar Wonder Box Curricula are designed for multi-age groups with the intention of growing children’s love of God’s creation. They bring together inspiration and wisdom from Messy Church, Godly Play, and Forest Schools and encourage exploration of scripture and the more than human world through exploration and questions that are learner-focused. If at all possible, we encourage you to meet outside.

Before the children arrive

One adult or youth leader should have reviewed the materials and be prepared to tell the story. It can also be helpful for volunteers assisting at different stations to have a chance to look over the instructions and materials ahead of time. Convene the circle or room as is your usual custom. Prior to the participants’ arrival set up as many exploration stations as you are able to manage with the time, equipment and helpers that you have. Practice the activities that involve “creating a rainbow” -these will not work in all light conditions. Some activities can be messy and wet.

Focus Time with Words and Actions

You will need a blue cloth or scarf to represent water; figures for Noah, Namah (and their family if desired), pairs and groups (break up the binary a bit) of animals, a black feather to represent the raven, a light feather to represent the dove, a toy ark, or a basket to act as the ark, a crystal or prism to cast rainbows, if you are doing the lesson inside or on a cloudy day, you may want a flashlight to help make the rainbows with the prism
