Text reads "Wild Lectionary, A Preacher's Environmental Resource" over loose green watercolour of a set of hills and trees

Wild Lectionary is for those who want to preach on climate justice themes. In scripture, landforms, skies, waterways, and creatures are transformed. In the world around us they are transformed as well by the advancing global climate crisis. Repeatedly we are called to attend to the wisdom of the more-than-human world. Each week a different contributor offers commentary on the lectionary readings, suggestions for preaching, and links to additional material. We hope you will use and share these resources.

Roots and Stories: First Sunday in Lent, Year C

As I reflected on today’s readings, the theme they seemed to weave together is to begin Lent by reviewing our stories. With the First Reading, in which the writers of Deuteronomy are giving the reader a sort of Last Will and Testament of Moses, God’s people are reminded of their history and God’s presence in it. They are told to recount that history in ritual and celebration. We are also being reminded to reflect on our personal intergenerational stories. Who were our ancestors? How was God with them as they journeyed? How do their stories impact your story? How has God’s presence in all of our stories led us to where we are today: physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually?

First Sunday After Epiphany Year C: Married to the Land

Today’s readings speak to me of several related themes God’s love and God’s love of justice; our gifts and the gifts of others; to use our gifts in the service of the Creator; and, of our need to remember to trust and have faith. In this homily(-starter), I wish to plant seeds for reflection through giving snippets of my thought on the readings.

Fourth Sunday in Lent, year ‘B’: Transformation

The theme running through today’s readings is transformation and its constituent elements: self-reflection, positive example, agency. The Sermon Starters at the end will give examples of how transformation and its components are a recurring necessity to our ongoing work in issues of justice for humanity and our more-than-human relatives.

Advent 2B Wilderness: the Entrance Way to Hope

Wilderness, desert, valleys, mountains, hills, grass, flowers, flocks, heaven, earth, fire, river, insects: the lectionary readings are full of images from the more than human world. Every year the second week of Advent tells us a different version of the wilderness prophet John the Baptizer and the themes of water, wilderness, and repentance speak powerfully to the realities of pollution, extinction and human-caused climate change.
