Interested in writing for Wild Lectionary?

Here’s what you need to know…

  • What is Wild Lectionary?

Wild Lectionary is a lectionary commentary offering detailed practical resources for preachers and teachers who want to focus on land, climate justice, environmental racism, and related topics, but may not have the time to do the exegetical work needed.

Wild Lectionary was born of Salal + Cedar’s 2017-2019 collaboration with Radical Discipleship, which offered a single reflection on one of the Revised Common Lectionary texts for each Sunday during those years.

  • Wild Lectionary Contributors Provide:

    An overview/introductory paragraph

A exegetical examination of ecological themes in all of the relevant Sunday Lections

2-4 well developed “sermon starters” a coherent exploration of themes that preachers can easily apply to their own context

A photo or other image from your bioregion to accompany your writing, open source or to which you own rights

An invoice if you are not donating your time

Sources and resources list - giving credit where others’ work is used and directing folks to additional resources (like a climate-focused mini-textweek)

Contributor bios - a chance to promote your relevant projects and for readers to learn the who and what of faith-based climate justice work.

  • Funding and Payment

This project has been enthusiastically anticipated and is supported by funders (The Calvin Institute, the Anglican Foundation of Canada, and Anglican Diocese of New Westminster) and collaborators (Geez Magazine, Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Ministry, and the Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice) for the past or upcoming year.

We have a modest honorarium of $200 CAD for contributors which is paid within a month after contributions are submitted. We ask white contributors, salaried contributors, contributors with inherited wealth to consider contributing some or all of that amount so that we can more justly compensate BIPOC, disabled, and under-employed contributors and so that we can continue the project into the future.

  • Are you interested?

If you are interested, make sure to look at some of our existing content at the main Wild Lectionary page. Then, fill out the form at the bottom of this page! We look forward to hearing from you.

If you are excited about the project but writing for Wild Lectionary is more than you can take on right now, there are some other ways to support:

  • Use Wild Lectionary for your own teaching and preaching and let others know about it

  • Recruit and refer other writers and scholars

  • Ask individuals or congregations to sponsor a Sunday. It costs $350 to cover the costs for one week’s post. As more and more preachers use the resource, this is a small way for a community to make a big impact.

FAQs

  • The short answer is: it is up to you! We are committed to paying our contributors, and have funding to do so. We are able to pay $200 CAD (~$150 USD) per contribution.

However, if you are able to donate your time (or the money to cover your time), then we will be able to continue this project longer and potentially pay more to those who have been historically excluded and marginalized. Consider if this may be possible for you if you:

    • Spend more time thinking about wealth management than monthly expenses

    • Have access to a pension and extended medical benefits that cover expenses many people pay out of pocket for.

    • Have access to inherited wealth?

  • We are prioritizing getting interested people the opportunity to contribute in ways that work for them. If you are interested in covering multiple weeks, please let us know. We’ll be happy to confirm you for your first week and then will follow up with you if we have additional weeks we are looking to cover.

  • We aim to post new content at least a week prior to the relevant Sunday. In order to have time to review contributions and format them for posting, we need to receive all pieces of your contribution a minimum of 10 days prior to the Sunday you are writing for, but a few days early will always be appreciated.

  • Probably! We are definitely interested in your idea, and are open to it if it is a good fit. Include it in the form below or reach out to Laurel directly if you want to find out what might be possible.

Let’s work together.
